Guavas, Geckos and Going Places

It is now half term for Naomi which is really good – she will hopefully be able to get a mix of rest, exploration, and preparation of work to get ahead for the coming term. It has been a mixed half term and I think everyone at the school is looking forward to a break and to recharge their batteries. We were thinking of a trip (dependant on costs) to Rubondo Island National Park (Official Link here) which is home to many birds, crocodiles, and the elusive Sitatunga antelope, but unfortunately it’s a little too much this time – so will hope to get away somewhere else for a bit of a change from the city.

Guava Tree Bark

Guava Tree Bark

Back in Mwanza, it is coming into Guava season – never had one before so looking forward to them ripening, but for the moment I am really fascinated by the colouration and texture of the bark on the guava tree trunk – it is a really great mix that I’m sure would make a nice designer dress.

Following the passing of Roxy 2 weeks ago today, our other compound dog; Ed has been a little down and lonely. He did enjoy a visit from the headmaster’s dog, Tusca for an afternoon but in addition to this I’ve also been trying to comfort him through trying to be a good friend – a few extra bits of chicken/other meat here and there and also by mirroring his actions for example the picture below. I think it is helping him along but any other advice on how to boost dog morale would be appreciated.

In other news, while downloading Scribus to do some design work this week, our internet managed to max out at 390 kB/second (low speed was 350 kB/sec)! Quite an achievement for our Vodacom dongle on the Bomba 30 tariff, especially when I hear stories of people using it and not being able to even load their emails…and equally impressive ‘because we’re in Africa’! It does worry me that we have worse times to come, although this download speed was even achieved when using the dongle in the later part of the month at ‘low speed’ after we had used our first 2GB download at ‘high speed’! Hope it continues to work as at the moment it is a really good deal!

Finally for those of you not on Facebook, this week we welcomed a new addition to our flat – a baby Gecko. Early this week, we discovered 2 eggs in the keep (the bit where the latch fits into the frame) of our back door. Midweek, our houseworker had somehow managed to get them out and put them on the worktop. Being biologists we put them back where we found them and 2 days later we had one of them hatch. The young man/woman has now moved on from place of birth to go and eat some ants for us. Good luck to him we say!

  1. Rob you make me laugh! Hope ed appreciates all your efforts 🙂

  2. hellooooooo Bousies!
first of all let me say how totally jealous I am at the thought of you indulging in Guava’s very soon… i absolutely LOVE them and have to say it was difficult not to drool over my keyboard at the thought!!! in fact if you manage to get your hands on any guava roll, which is dried guava pressed into rolls, them you must give those a go… Kyle is mad about them… but only available through the South African shop, we don’t get them very often!
How awesome seeing a little gecko hatch! wow! your pics are fantastic, and I so look forward to reading your blog and following your travels!!!
Do let us know where you go for your little break, and we look forward to seeing more of your fantastic professional pics!!
Everyone at Langstone is well, Josh is going to be joining the leadership team as a junior, so that’s all very exciting news… can’t off the top of my head think of anything else that’s been happening… we SOOOOOOOO miss you at sunshine club Rob, we are so short staffed, and at the moment it’s just me and Jo with 22 kids!!! aaargh!!! only til april tho, and then 8 move up, so we will have a bit of a break until the newbies start in September!!
the weather has got pretty chilly over here the last few days, and today it rained and was grey and miserable all day!!!! So continue to enjoy the heat of that african sun, and I look forward to your next posting. Lots of love to you both and God Bless… from Amanda, Dev and boys xxxxx

    • Do you have any idea how big they need to be/when they are ripe? We have no idea!

      • ooopsie just seen this now…. quava’s when ripe are about the size of a big plum/satsuma and the skin goes like a yellowy colour, and inside nice pinky colour….. sssslllurrrp here I go again!

Aarrh Rob you are all Heart!!! Hope Ed realises that he really is getting a good deal…….and that all in the UK are being amused by your double act!!!! Natasha has arrived home from Austria tonight. She seems to have had a great time and has amused us with her tales…..but not the large pile of suspect smelly washing!!!!!!! Have a great break together and enjoy the geko look forward to seeing their development and progress.

    love always to you both.

ps. I think you have found your niche in life…. I look forward to modelling the first exclusive Bousie label.

  4. Rob I would certainly like a skirt made out of fabric emulating the bark of the guava tree – my colours. Oh I laughed at that wonderful photo of you mirriring the dog! You must add canine pyschology to the rest of your talents! I am sure he apprecaites your efforts and the titbits! Alas half term has just ended for us. i hope you enjoy your week, love Angela

  5. Lucy Tarallo-Fox

Seeing Rob mirror Ed is possibly the highlight of my week! 🙂

We are super jealous of your guavas…Ben saw some in Tesco (two for £1) so we’re going to get some and pretend we’re in Tanzania with you…no doubt they’ll taste watery and insipid in comparison, but it’s the thought that counts! xxx

  6. Hi Rob

Aww you are a kind one to Ed and yep, I had noticed him a bit down too after losing his friend. However, he use to be the lone dog so I am sure he will enjoy being incharge again. But dogs are amazing creatures and are very aware of what is going on.

I think we all need to give Ed some extra attention and it is great he had a wee dog over to visit him too.

Too bad you aren’t able to get away but I am sure you both will enjoy some down time to recharge your batteries.

Jealous of your Internet as ever since I came back from my Dec break I have found my Voda modem to be so touch and go and even had to buy a new one a month ago which seems just as slow. It says it connects but then loading pages sending an email seems beyond it’s limit but hey this is Africa so you take things in stride. I know the other people in the flats were having the same issue so maybe your just lucky and getting the internet for us all :).

…enjoy the quicker internet while you have it as you never know when it might be slow. Hope the flats aren’t too quiet but I know there are a few people around.

See you very soon. Becks 🙂
